Driver's Role in the Student Discipline System
busdriver.bmp
The ultimate responsibility and authority for the discipline of transported students rests with the Board of Education as articulated in Minnesota Statutes and the District Board of Education Policy on Discipline for Transported Students. The contractor, and contract driver, are responsible for handling all disciplinary matters in strict accordance with the provisions of Board of Education Policies and the Specifications Specifications for Pupil Transportation section of the contract for transportation services.

The school bus driver is responsible for reporting all incidents of unacceptable student conduct which her/she observes, or which is reported to him/her, to the building principal on the District Incident Report Form and for submitting both the District copy and the Contractor copy of the form to their Dispatcher in a timely manner. The building principal is primarily responsible for investigating the reports and for determining what appropriate action will be taken pursuant to Board Policy, including suspension and removal of the student from the school bus.

The school bus driver is in charge of the school bus while enroute and is responsible for supervision of the students and, if applicable, special education bus assistant, as well as the completion of all required reports. This responsibility cannot be delegated to an assistant who is present to assist the driver. School bus safety assistants, or so called "bus patrols," are present to assist the driver and are subject to all rules applying to other students.

If the school bus driver encounters unaceptable student conduct which is unsafe and which he/she cannot control through the use of verbal commands to the student(s), he she must request assistance from the District through his/her dispatcher via the two-way radio system.
